ZFS needs an on disk dataformat and Sun did not create a framework that allows to have vendor specific enhancements and that supports a distributed development. Did someone think about a format (e.g. similar to the POSIX.1-2001 tar extensions) that would allow to implement vendor unique extensions and that would allow to ignore some features wile implementing others?
