Anders, this is interesting case, because mental model collides with action primacy here. In most of cases you are searching documents from top to bottom - so pressing "next" is main and most often realized action after typing a phrase and pressing ENTER. This, connected with horizontal layout of search-box, leads directly to problem you have mentioned. I don't know if there is any best solution.
