I am also very skeptical of the need for something like this.

Not everything is designed to meet a "need".

I just had a conversation like this with some engineering students whom I am teaching interactive media. My response was "what's the point of text messaging when you can just call someone?". I think he got it after that.

By the way, interesting to note that this Twitter discussion is pretty tweety (tweetie?) in its nature.
