Peter Boersma puts forward another caricatured oversimplification of what actually occurs. It's difficult to respond to it without being drawn into unproductive and uninteresting argumentation, so I'll just let his comment stand for what it is.
None of the projects of which I'm familiar with would've gotten underway if what Peter claims was true. Clients really are interested in seeing past experience and documentation of process and outcomes. And to respond to Jared's comment, no RED is not simply an attempt to add complexity to an inherently simple approach to design.
