yep, we all know how 'flexible' job titles can be. I like that one,
putting it on a resume probably would increase the chance of someone
actally looking at it.
Diesel mechanic (with the accompanying trade training / schools and
"valued employee" sort of meaningfulness...) might be a model that
represents the future for a lot of folks tolerably well.
I drive a Diesel, and I work on it (including the engine), so am I
violating a regulation because I'm not 'certified'?
I have a number of regulated certifications, among them
Brake Mechanic
Commercial Driver
Pyrotechnition
does this mean I'm any good at any of these things? you have no way of
knowing, all you know is that I passed the certification effort. This
ranges from a written test (mechanic), to written test plus recommendation
from 5 existing licensed people (Pyro), to written test plus performance
test by Government (Commercial Driver). But I'm a far better Pyro then I
am a commercial driver, in spite of the drivers certification being
'harder'.
In all of these fields I know people that I would trust absolutly, and
others who I wish did not exist (some Pyros I will just refuse to work
with for example)
The spectrum of folks in the profession is likely going to stay
incredibly broad until someone outlaws installing the OS on your
systems 'for yourself'..... DIY is just too good a source of talent
to outlaw, AFAICT.
I strongly agree with this, and this is a major reason why I am opposed to
regulation (or required certifications)
Another Major reason for being opposed to regulation is that the
definition of the 'right way' to do something varies too much, and it
morphs over time. Licenseing tests change too slowly for a field in as
much flux and with so many 'good' ways to do things for them to be real.
As a result people study the 'right' answer for the test and then ignore
it for real work.
