The pithy ruminations from "Chris 'Ski' Kacoroski" on
<[lopsa-discuss] What are characteristics of the ideal sysadmin graduate> were:

=> they are creating a profile of the "ideal" system admin graduate from a 2
=> or 4 year program. The goal is to get an outline of skills and knowledge
=> needed. So what do you consider the skills and knowledge needed by a new
=> system admin graduate?

I consider that the ideal skills and knowledge for a new graduate, in
approximate order of importance, to be:

verbal communication (not just being 'well spoken', but the
willingness and ability to talk with others, to adapt verbal
content and style to suit the audience and subject matter,
the ability to listen to others, and the awareness of the
        success/failure of the communication)

writing ability (in English and/or the dominant language of
        the region or employer)

        analytic reasoning

        curiosity

troubleshooting experience (not necessarily with IT, but as
part of the process of examining a complex system and deciding
on the value of different methods)

        enthusiasm

domain-specific knowledge (ie., the buzzwords about different
technologies that we put on our resumes)

In my opinion, anyone with motivation and skills and knowledge in the
first 6 categories can learn and be successful at the domain-specific
part. A technically qualified 'system admin graduate' without the "soft
skills" would not be an ideal or preferred candidate for anything.

In short, if someone can't communicate with others and express their
ideas verbally and in writing in an effective way, then their technical
qualifications are meaningless. This is particularly important for a new
graduate, as expectations of their domain-specific knowledge are low,
and their need to listen and learn from others is high.

Mark
