D, you seem pretty interested in dissolving LOPSA. Can you explain
more about why? In particular, if people who like LOPSA want to
keep LOPSA going, why do you want them to stop? What do you see as
the benefit of not having LOPSA exist, even if other people want it
to exist?
I see it as diverting resources and attention away from organizations
which are proven effective and can actually consistently implement
real programs.
it's not a zero sum game, preventing people from participating in LOPSA does not
mean that they will participate in whatever organization you wish they did
participate in (and if you are annoying enough, your 'advocacy' will actually
reduce the support for the other organizations in the process)
you sound like some of the open source advocates that think that if project X
were to go away, all the people who were passionate about it would become
passionate about the advocates passion. It just doesn't work that way.
And (as I noted in my earlier reply to George), it's the best way I
know of to get "value" of any sort out of the money LOPSA's sitting
on, to get it disbursed to some other NPO who can actually do
something valuable with it.
How much money are we talking about here? given that LOPSA just got out of debt,
it can't be much more than a year or so worth of dues.
But in any case, what are these other organizations that you think are doing a
better job? I don't know of them, and if LOPSA were to go away tomorrow, I still
wouldn't know of them, so there's no way I would be joining them.
