I hope I am not jinxing myself by writing this. In the end, I bit the bullet and decided to buy a new wireless router.
I had been looking at the dual band Linksys WRT610N, which had been listed as tested and trouble free for Duet operation, too. With some apprehension I plonked down $170. But it was money well spent - as far as the Duet works, it seems to now work flawlessly.
