I'm still using my reliable 3 year old Linksys WRT54GL. It just plain works. ;)
I do think your troubles illuminate the very common issue of WiFi and general router performance issues we see in here. You are trying brand new, newer version hardware and sometimes are seeing worse performance than the older gear you are replacing.
