Well don't I feel silly now! It turns out I just needed to restart Squeezeplay after configuring eqMac for the 'MacBook Pro Speakers'. No jiggery pokery with plist files needed at all. So eqMac is a keeper - it's only the free version, but it does exactly what I wanted it to. I've configured it to launch at login, so it's always there.
And boy does it now sound good.
