I think the problem may be Firefox and the handling of multiple http request in parallel which may be exacerbated by single core processors.
Can you check whether pipelining is enabled: Enter the URL about:config and then type in "network.http" to the browser's "filter" function to identify the following entries: network.http.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests If pipelining is set to false - change it to true and set maxrequests to 8.
