I'd never done it before but I couldn't believe it wasn't possible, so I just poked around and was able to bind ctrl-shift-o to the degree symbol.

I used Tools > Macro > Record macro; recorded inserting the character;
saved the new macro; then did Tools > Customize > Keyboard, under Category selected OpenOffice.org macros > User > Standard > Module1, under Function selected my new macro, then selected a shortcut key and clicked on Modify. Maybe not the most obvious mechanism, but definitely possible.

Just a quick suggestion for a feature:

Allow users to assign custom keys to specific characters. One of the only places I really miss Microsoft Word is when I'm typing papers for the sciences. I would really love to be able to assign ctrl-shift-o to the degree symbol, ctrl-shift-a to alpha, etc. It's so annoying I've (unfortunately) given up using open office writer for most of my academic writing (my old copy of Word '95 allows me this functionality).

Thanks,
