Another sort of intangible issue has to do with the ground conductivity
in your area, especially with vertical antennas, but probably with
others as well. 

For example, I have been very satisfied with the performance of a windom
antenna. It's not up very high, and the two legs aren't even 180-degrees
apart due to the limitations of tree locations, but I do live on the
coast, across the street from a salt marsh. I'm sure that contributes to
its performance in some way. OTOH, when I set up a "better" version of
the same antenna (higher, straighter) at my in-laws place on the
volcanic island of Hawaii, it didn't begin to compare. As one of the
local hams out there told me, "there is no ground here - we're sitting
on top of a huge glass insulator"!
