"But not in that order" means just what it says.  The rework is to happen
before committing this functionality to XFree86's CVS.  Both Kevin & I
agree on this.  We see no reason to essentially duplicate what your CVS
already provides.  Thus, a strict merge of what you call the "stable"
branch isn't in the cards, simply because doing so isn't a step forward as
far as the community is concerned (other than convenience issues).
