If you've got those in your files it means CVS has somehow gotten confused. 
If you do something like a 'cvs update' from the top level directory, you 
should get *NO* lines that look like:

M xc/asdf/adsf/adsf/somefile.c

Note the capital 'M'.

I bet you have a few.  Remove them & update again.
