Exatly, so what's the problem?? The new program won't do that. However the older X server will so this is a non-issue. We are 'hopefully' talking about DRI enabeled systems, making them better than Longhorn. For non 3d(DRI) systems I would hope that Mesa would be able to use there 2d parts to help the software renderer work faster. This work is needing tobe done, it would speed up ALL OpenGL apps for these older systems, with or with-out Joe's work(The DirectFB replacement).
