George Mason is using our DSpace repository for holding our ETDs,
along with the other usual IR types of things. I wouldn't say there is
a current "best practices" guide, but the Networked Digital Library of
Theses and Dissertations (www.ndltd.org) web site has much information.

http://www.ndltd.org/standards/metadata/current.html is the current
metadata schema they employ, which is Dublin Core. It works quite well
for DSpace - I simply added in the thesis elements and created a
custom submission page for the ETD communities. Additionally, you may
wish to have one of the more obvious elements be indexed, like Degree
Discipline. This allows students to search for ETDs from the
department they are in. We have an individual who manages Theses and
Dissertations, and I have worked with her to try to wrangle DSpace to
fit the needs of the students.

Additionally, you may wish to modify your DSpace installation to have
an embargo feature if your institution offers that to students. I have
written up instructions on the DSpace wiki for adding that feature.

We are just getting rolling with ETDs here at Mason, but they are an
obvious fit for an IR.
