I don't understand this sentence because it seems to contradict itself.  Or 
something.  I know of no repeaters being installed in the simplex portions of 
the bands that D-STAR repeaters use, but maybe something's different where you 
are?

D-STAR is just as capable of operating on simplex as well as any other mode, 
and in fact -- for tools like D-RATS, not having the repeater's ID's after 
transmissions, speeds up file transfer immensely.  (More effective throughput.) 
 Works great.

I wouldn't recommend 146.52 for calling though, since it'll confuse the heck 
out of FM users.  In some areas a "standard" has been set for local D-STAR 
simplex use, or a mixture of D-STAR and other digital/narrowband modes.  Check 
with your local area frequency coordinators...
