Apple's four-cornered product line is just a basic concept....it doesn't mean there
isn't room within each "box" for variation.
At the last WWDC in 98, Apple specifically stated that they were aware of the demand
for a subnotebook Mac, for those demanding maximum portability. The reason we haven't
seen this yet is that Apple still considers it a niche product compared to the more
mainstream PowerBook and iBook. Apple had to make a choice in what to focus on, and
this choice resulted in the attention being put in the new PowerBooks and the new
iBook. Now that these are out of the way, Apple has more time to focus on the
subnotebook model.
I don't think Apple is so clueless as to think it isn't necessary...reading their
marketing copy for the 2400 shows that Apple knows there is a market for it.
But at the same time, a subnotebook is not an easy thing to develop.
I think there's also a big problem in that so many people seem to think that
subnotebook/ultraportable = sony vaio. The Sony Vaio was one of the groundbreaking
products in terms of thinness, etc. but it has really been surpassed by products from
other companies, like Panasonic, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Toshiba, etc. The Vaio is still a
solid product, but it is hardly the only thing out there any more.
