Jeff,

I do not believe it is possible for a modem to plug in to the ADB port.  
I have a Global Village Platinum which plugs into the serial port; bought 
last year at a surplus store (AllMac in San Jose) for $59.  Works great; 
gets its power from the ninth pin on the serial port so there is no power 
cord and no wall wart.  Fits in the palm of my hand.  I imagine there are 
newer ones that are even smaller than this.
