Jeff,
What you have in mind is most likely the portable 3JTech 56k modem by 3J 
Com - very small, needs no external power supply because it uses the adb 
port as a power source. The manufacturer is taiwanese ( www.a3J.com.tw ), 
and to my knowledge retailers in the US no longer have this device in 
stock. I bought mine (refurbished) from MacResQ some six months ago, 
maybe they still have them.
