I've never heard Photobucket referred to as "The Bucket". My circle of
acquaintances uses Flickr, though, so I could be missing out on a term.

The over-theming really gets me when it's relentless, when the site refuses
to admit in obvious places that, hey, if you're coming from LJ you'll know
this as [X] but we call it [Y]. The main problem is that users are already
used to one term, the difference in terminology doesn't relate to a
difference in function, so there only reason to change the term is arbitrary
-- branding.

LJ doesn't have anything like a drops bucket, so we're not arbitrarily
renaming an existing thing, we're naming a new thing. If we show new users
that they can buy drops to trade (either with Dreamwidth or with other
users) for layouts or journal exporting or paid time, and they'll keep their
drops in a bucket ... they'll start calling it a bucket without feeling like
they're parroting a brand. And they'll start saying things like "I need to
dump out my bucket, who wants drops?" to mean that they're deleting a
journal, can't take their purchased points with them, and would like to
spread them among other users -- not out of brand loyalty, but because it's
easier to communicate their meaning with the terms Dreamwidth has given
them. The only terms that will catch on, therefore, are the ones that
meaningfully differentiate between an existing thing and a new thing, not
just between two similar brands.

Sorry for getting a little thinky, I've got too much time on my hands today.
