The one thing I haven't seen mentioned is choosing delimiters -- some people use ": ", and some people just use ":" (colon with/without a space). Since many layouts had to be hacked in the first place, they usually allow you to pick a delimiter; some people may be using "|" or "~" or other characters (to avoid things like being unable to use a colon otherwise). If this is only going to support one type of delimiter, oh boy howdy we're going to need some kind of batch editing for tags!
