Angela...Have you been living your life in a closet? (no pun intended)
Any person with viable pro-creative materials (ova or sperm) can DECIDE
whether they want to procreate or not (and by procreate I am meaning
pass on their own genetic material). The processes are varied (sperm
donation, sex with an opposite sex person, in-vitro fertilization,
surrogates, etc.) and available to all. And, I believe in the near
future it will also be possible for same-sex couples to both donate
genetic material to a single fetus through the developing cloning
techniques. Same-sex couples really do have to DECIDE whether they want
to procreate, whereas heterosexual couples can have an OOPS I'm
pregnant.

If such is the case and the future is already prefigured in the mind
of some god, then it matters not one whit what we discuss here or
do (or not do) as a result of it. Human freedom and free choice
would be a hollow illusion perpetrated by a celestial sadist. Not
having evidence that there is not a divine plan is no excuse to
coerce others to follow your own version of what you think such a
plan might be (I wish the Taliban and the antiabortionists understood
this). The absense of the invisible is notoriously difficult to detect,
but this fact is not proof of its presense, and believing doesn't make
something so. Joe

Britain and Empire/Environmental. The History Department of the
University of Redlands invites applications for a tenure-track
position beginning September 1999. The successful candidate will
be responsible for courses in the history of Britain and the British
Empire, and environmental history and/or historical geography. It
also requires the ability to offer general survey courses in world
history as well as advanced undergraduate seminars, some of
which contribute both to the major and to the social science
credential program for prospective secondary education teachers.
Preference will be given to those candidates who are able 1) to
teach courses in the non-western portions of the British Empire
such as Africa, the Middle East, or India; and 2) to those with
training in environmental history or historical geography.
Commitment to undergraduate Liberal Arts education in an
increasingly diverse student body is essential. Six course annual
load; competitive salary. Ph.D. required. Candidate should submit
a letter of application, current vitae, three letters of
recommendation, graduate placement dossier, and evidence of
effective teaching to Professor Kathy Ogren, Department of History,
University of Redlands, P.O. Box 3080, Redlands, California 92373-
0999. All materials must be received by December 1, 1998. Those
who will be attending the annual AHA convention in Washington,
D.C., January 7-10, 1999 should make that known in their
application. The University of Redlands is an AA/EOE. Women and
minorities are welcome.
