An early example of EDI efficiency:
New Walmart vendor receives first 850 from Walmart. Document gets translated
and sent to internal order-entry application. Bug causes all quantities to
get multiplied by 10. Vendors' sales representative is ecstatic. Production
manager has fits and schedules extra shifts. After exhausting week, order
gets shipped just in time and a phalanx of trucks fans out across the
country loaded to the gunwales with panty-hose. First Walmart store manager
to receive goods refuses shipment. All trucks get recalled and a new
manufacturers' outlet shortly opens with no EDI capability.
