If this is an inbound document, your trading partner need to specify another
element separator. Normally your EDI translation software can handle it.

If this is an outbound document, you need to change the element separator
value. As you have discovered, you should select a value which doesn't
appear in the data you will be transmitting. With that in mind, practically
any character can be used, and as stated earlier, most EDI software will
adapt to the change in separator -- your element separator selection only
governs output documents.

Does anyone have a work around for a situation where a trading partner has
imbedded data containing the same character as the element separator.
I have a trading partner set up to use an asterisk as an element separator
but also has one element that contains an asterisk?
