Actually,
EDIFACT has a release character (? by default) that caters for this anomaly so
you can have element separators inside text fields. Most translators
automatically detect this and insert the appropriate release character. Unfortunately,
this doesn’t help you Dale. As everyone else has suggested, you need to change
the element separator or, if outbound, cleanse the data before it gets to (or
through depending on the functionality of your mapper) the mapping process. Andy -----Original
Message----- That won't work Dale, as you've
undoubtedly found out. I've seen several instances where a TP has an asterisk
as the separator and is also throwing it into a NTE segment as part of a note,
and there isn't a translator made that can handle that, because it goes
completely against any standard (ANSI X-12, EDIFACT or any other). The
only solution is to call your TP and inform them of their transgression.
When I've had to do this in the past it has never been a problem once they
understood the significance/necessity of a unique character. Try using
the simile (or metaphor...I never was much good at grammar) of a sentence, and
then sprinkle spaces liberally throughout the sentence and you should be able
to illustrate the error of their ways. If they really don't want to change the
information they're entering, try to get them to use a different
separator. If they can't change their separator or their data talk to
their boss, because they've hired fools to run their EDIship. Drake Weideman Mark your calendar for this year's edition
