It continues to amaze me at how many people have blinders on when it comes to EDI processing. The simple fact is that if your company is committed to EDI and has made a conscious decision to incur the expense and headache of managing internal EDI systems then Walmarts AS2 offering makes complete sense. However, once you remove the blinders and see the full spectrum of companies and take into consideration everyones motivation regarding EDI you will see that Walmarts decision as well as any major retailers decision to connect directly to suppliers is a major boom to the EDI consulting and third party services industry. Our VAN and Managed Services Business has grown because of these direct connect requests. Why? It still comes down to whether or not a company wants to continue with the expense of running an EDI department. Sure, the they save some money on connectivity but after you replace everything else with properly deployed Managed Services the overall costs are still significantly lower and the service level usually increases because the resources involved with providing the EDI expertise is not diluted doing other IT projects. Remember, your eyes are never the only ones that see the world for what it is. Your perspective only applies to your situation and what you know or think you know. Trust me, the VAN business will not die. It is being re-engineered under your very eyes. Just wait and see.

I'll have to disagree here ;-) As a software developer / consultant, Walmart has supplied me with lots of income. Installing bisynch modems, installing AS2 software, GTIN modifications and my favorite: their 13 digit GLNs.
