My experience has been that the connectivity choice is the smallest portion of
the EDI expense. Sure, your VAN charges you per Kc, but the real cost is making
sure documents come in, get sent out, "packing" the order, changing the initial
ship to (for JC Penney only), creating the ASN (God forbid the ASN is ready
and you ship short), generating the invoices, printing the labels, and all the
ancillary reports associated with these functions.

The expense and headache of managing an EDI dept. is not small...I
agree with you. However, how do I explain to my customer that has
hired me for my services that our third party provider for EDI
doesn't work on Saturdays or Sundays so the missing ASN to Walmart is
dead in the water...enjoy that chargeback!

Sorry...been burned too many times. I've had to explain myself and
my company (different jobs...I've experienced the same thing for the
past 8 years) out of so many bad situations regarding outsourced EDI
that I would go with the expense and headache of my own EDI dept. 10
times over.

And Wal-Mart drives everything...there's no secret there. I have
spoken to vendors and retailers alike that do not have any plans to
move to an AS2 solution or upgrade to a new X12 version but then -
BAM!- it's suddenly due the following week because Wal-mart is
planning to do it as well. I dare someone to do a study on how many
companies make decisions based on Wal-Mart's new initiative to
upgrade to a new X12 version.

Steve -- I know your name from somewhere...it's killing me that I
can't place where I know it from.
