Jacky, I worked for a major Wal*Mart supplier for several years. During that time it would be inaccurate to say they offered ANY support to us. They made demands, but did not provide documentation. They created deadlines, but did not provide lead time. They gave ambiguous and conflicting instructions but NEVER responded to inquiries. They transmitted data that did not match their specifications, but refused to return phone calls.
If that has changed, good. I don't think the negative appraisals of Wal*Mart come because contractors can't make money. There is tons of money to be made working for Wal*Mart suppliers. Just not enough to make the headaches worthwhile. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jackie Woodie Sent: Tuesday, January 23, 2007 7:48 PM To: [email protected]; Paul McTeigue Subject: RE: [EDI-L] Re: Reducing/eliminating our EDI VAN -AS2 Certification Paul, I agree with you. Wal-Mart did a good thing doing away with bisynch communication. The time it took to transfer data could be incredible depending on the size of the file. Now being able to access data through the AS2 mailbox they created for their suppliers can make things easier. Wal-Mart will never be popular with consultants and/or 3rd parties because they like to connect directly to the supplier. They don't make life very easy for anyone other than the supplier. But they offer great support for their suppliers. They made a bet-the-company bet on the AS2 protocol and the Internet as the transport because their bisynch costs were becoming a differentiator. They were looking to mitigate their risks. Walmart is all about scale and they wanted to do everything they could to minimize the ramp up. So they required certification. They also provided a free one partner license. Perhaps Walmart will be viewed one day as the evangelist that enabled SMB partners to finally slash their EDI costs! We will get to the promised land - some day. -Paul -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of James Hatcher Sent: Monday, January 22, 2007 9:25 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [EDI-L] Re: Reducing/eliminating our EDI VAN -AS2 Certification Bottom line is that if the large buyers like Wal*Mart require certified solutions we're all stuck with it. Good luck changing their minds. :-P Till then the I.T. vendors that are certified need to recover the cost and trading partners need to buy certified solutions. P.S. There are Drummond certified AS2 solutions in the market that offer unlimited trading partner license bundles for well below USD 100K.
