Char,

I'm glad you got back to me. After I wrote that last email I had a friend
call me and mentioned he has a very nice power point that can explain the
basic workings of EDI. He always had great power points and I can try to get
that for you shortly. I have a few documents that explain the basics as
well, please understand when you are getting most of these they were made by
a particular provider and are trying to steer you towards becoming their
customer. When it comes to the actual service providers each one is
different and where one will work for a particular customer it will not for
the next. So I am hesitant in telling you to send only one providers
information. You'll end up with one customer that loves you and ten that
want to hunt you down. It has to be on a one to one basis. I personally am
never been able to match a customer to a provider without a fair amount of
detail to their company and supply chain process. Then my work begins to
find them the best provider for what they are trying to do. If you are able
to I would suggest sending them someone's contact such as myself. If there
is a process you need me to go through so I can be that consultant for you I
will be happy to comply. In doing that you know they would be taken care of
by someone who deals with EDI on a daily basis and since I don't work for
anyone but myself they are not going to be pushed into a direction that they
don't need to go, that can be very costly. In turn please get back to me
when you have a chance and let me know if that could work out for you. As
well I am very interested in RFID and learning more about it everyday, I
think that is the next area to have some great advances. I look forward to
hearing back from you.

Thank you,

All EDI

James I so agree with you, there is no EDI for dummies. EDI is a learned
trait and you either "get it" or you don't.
I am looking for something simple that explains the benefits and processes
in terms anyone could understand, with pictures included just in case some
parties lack comprehension skills (sales reps). It would also be helpful to
have something they could send to a customer who does not currently have EDI
capabilities and would need a third party VAN or consultant to implement EDI
for them. I am all about helping our EDI consultants and acquaintances in
this group and others. It's not that I am into the whole sales thing but
whatever I can do to get our customers to trade EDI documents with us gives
me job security and more revenue would hopfully mean more pay...but I'm
probably reaching a bit far on that one.
A little about our industy....We are a #1 distributor in the US of POS and
RFID equipment. In the last 9 months I have grown our EDI partners from 4
customers to 90+ customers and from 0 vendors to 12 vendors.

   Thank You,
  Char

  Char,

I wish I could tell you different but you will never find an EDI for
dummies. I have read the other responses, and beyond the great search for
information and the jokes others are giving. The truth is it is an ongoing
processes for every day you spend with EDI there is something new you need
to know. The best way is to look at the current job in front of you and
solve that situation. Every project you work on you will cover new ground
in
some way shape or data format. I started with a glossary of EDI terms and
a
couple friends to help me solve the EDI situations as they arise, three
years later I am very proficient in EDI plus the logistics world in whole.
Today I help others with there EDI situations and I still learn something
new everyday. Saying that I would be more than happy to help you out with
your Director of Sales and getting him to feel comfortable with some EDI
language. Please get back to me when you get chance and we can discuss
more
in detail exactly what you need him to understand.

  Thank you,

  All EDI

Subject: [EDI-L] Need a PPT on EDI or EDI for Dummies

I was wondering if anyone has and could please forward me a PPT
presentation about what EDI is. Basically EDI for Dummies without going
into detail about specific EDI softwares. Yes I know what it is and I
have tried to explain it to our Director of Sales but it is as if we
are speaking two different languages and I fear he will never
understand. I speak "geek" and he speaks "would sell my momma for a
penny" and I have been unable to find a translator to bridge the gap
  between our two languages.
I have a little mpeg of the little guy beating his head on his keyboard
until it bleeds, but that's not graphic enough info for him and he
demands more. I have tried going into more detail but he does not
understand FTP, SMTP, sFTP, SSH, AS2 or anything else. So if anyone out
there has simple enough PPT for a "trained monkey" (my analogy of a
sales rep) to understand please forward you would be saving my
overworked self a lot of grief. Yes I checked the files section first
  to no avail.

  Thanks in Advance,
  Char
