Well Samantha, I would first offer a personal disclaimer.... I serve as a
consultant to US Customs and Border Protection. Therefore, my comments to this
thread must not be construed as an official statement in any way.

Customs requires the submission of electronic information detailing the
movement of commodities and persons moving across the US border.

As such I can state, quite proudly,  that CBP works closely with the entirely
of our trade community in a collaborative manner.  Strict attention to the EDI
standards as published is tantamount. Certainly, as data collection mandates
are adopted through any number of federally mandated regulations, these changes
are coordinated and adopted in a collaborative manner with our impact trade
partner community, both within the DISA X.12 standards maintenance process and
within the UN/EDIFACT (WCO) international standards community. From my vantage
point, we have a very good relationship with our trade community.  I believe we
do a very, very good job (insert pride again here) with respect to mitigating
impacts to our trade partner community.

Finally, I will forever recall a post on this web-board a couple years ago,
where it was suggested by another respondent, that programming and sending EDI
to Customs was rather simple. The quote, as I recall, was, "with US Customs EDI
reporting, it's build it and then it's lights out".  Yeah.  I took a great deal
of pride in that post. Both then, and now.

800 pound gorilla?  Not at all.

Kind Regards to All,

Bud Blankenship -Consultant

Agreed.  I enforce standards with vendors but with customers I've learned that
its a waste of time trying to insist.

Out of curiosity...is US customs an 800 lb gorilla that enforces standards or
the a rule breaker like some of my friends who do HIPAA EDI describe the US gov
in their world?
