Hello Louis,
I believe your right there are debates in any organization.
But what concerns me is that we promote a product
without telling or showing them how to use it. I know
there are efforts out there doing just that, but their making
only so much progress. We should be mainstream after
so many years.
In our efforts to promote OO.o we must go the extra mile.
Not only OO.o but other Open Source software too. We seem
(The Open Source Community) to think that we done our job
making Open Source software mainstream. However, I'm saying
we must think outside of the box , so to speak, inorder to promote
OO.o. and being more patient with newcomers. We must explore
every avenue to promote OO.o including political, civil, entertainment,
and charitable organizations. Whatever it takes as long as it legal.
Keep fighting the good fight! Thanks for listening.
regards,
David Bumgardner
Jenkins, Kentucky
p.s. I'm trying to promote OO.o to a substance abuse center for men and a
women's (physically
abuse) center.
I recently installed 00.o on a computer for a horse riding program for
kids that are physically
and developmentally behind. If there is any one person or an
organization that uses a computer,
its to our benefit to introduce OO.o.

With the help of the Ingots organization we (PkPlug) have managed to
get a local 4 year Liberal Arts college to start using OO.o and
a Local Phone company and an ISP too. The local ISP passes out
00.o on disk with other Open Source software to their customers
for free. They have said our Linux Users' Grouup is responsible for
this.
However, Ingots is largely responsible for all this and to date Ingots
is yet
to be established in the area. This should say a lot about what Ingots
is
doing for the OO.o community.
This is fine. :-) It's not using the list to privilege X organization
over OOo and it is focusing on how OOo is being advanced in schools--
the point of this list :-) I am not opposed to Ingots nor have I ever
said that Ingots (or any other org's) work should be deprecated. I am
rather insistent on the notion of using OOo lists for OOo work
impartially. Other groups have also helped OOo get ahead; I'd like to
have them feel that they are free to represent their work here on behalf
of OOo, provided it is not just to toot their horn and not OOo's.
I take the chance that this is not overly simplistic. The kids in the
area
have to take drivers training when they reach 16 years. Consider the
vehicle OO.o and the instructor that gives the training Ingots. I
apologize
in advance if this argument is none of my business.
It's not an argument. It's rather a clarification of using the OOo lists.
Debates are normal in any group situation, as we all have different
understandings of the situation and differ in our understandings of
others' understandings :-).

Louis

No, it's not the perfect venue. If you want to publicize what Ingot

I actually posted to a whole range of relevant lists such as
Schoolforge
UK and the Open Source Consortium. The only complaint I have so far
experienced is here. Rather sad since the main idea was to promote OOo
and others seem to have a much more positive view of this.
Complaint? I have actually not complained and am surprised you see it
as such. Rather, I have clarified what this list is about. It is
about OOo in schools. It is not about Ingot. If you wish to post about
Ingot, fine, just use your own lists. Is that clear?
As you may have seen, I suggested other options, too. These are
available to all other companies that are involved with furthering
OOo. You are free to use them.
The point is to leave lists like this open to all.
Other people have posted here about their company education
initiatives
- here is an example from Gary Serda at Sun.

Great work everyone promoting OO to Education. Wanted to make sure
everyone knew that Sun is offering free web-based training on

have
any questions.
I didn't notice any posts from you rebuking Sun at the time.
Hm. Gary's post is a little different from yours; but more to the
point, we didn't really have these other venues yet, or at least not
as defined as now, when he posted. But I would, now, suggest to Gary
and others that they use the venues I've suggested. This is not a list
to advertise work of the other companies.
Mind, you are perfectly free to describe your work on furthering OOo
in schools in the UK and elsewhere.
So seems like its open to all except me, despite the fact that over
the
last 4 years or so I have spent a good deal of time helping people
here
with a wide range of educational issues.
No, actually, it's a matter of clarifying the policy on this subject
generally. In fact, you are not being singled out at all. It is rather
that several companies are using OOo resources for advertisement. We
would prefer that they pay for advertisement. Believe me, few are as
aware of the fine work you have done to further OOo in UK schools as
I. After all, if you recall, I helped set up the OOoEdu project for
you and was an early champion. I respect the work you do; I should
hope you return the favour.
This is not a question of being closed minded, Adam, as you surely
know. It is a question of keeping this list impartial and open to all
involved in furthering OOo in schools throughout the world. I'm sure
you understand that, too.
I can only assume this is a personal thing and I think other people
can
see that too.
Uh, no. It's not personal at all Ian. And, as mentioned, you are
free--and encouraged--to post to the newsletter and to update the
Solutions page. The point is to keep this list free and impartial for
all.
best,
Louis
Cheers,
Ian
