It is a bit sad to see these services going but, as you know Phil, VHF radio can provide the same range as the 2182 channel and is an integral part of the GMDSS system. Indeed VHF is all that's required for coastal ships.
I was rather struck by the impact of ending telegram service in India had on the general public there.
