Bob,

Does the same thing happen if you operate into a dummy load?
If all is OK into a dummy load, then the K3 is OK, but you have RF-in-the-shack issues to resolve - add current mode chokes to your antenna feedlines.

thanks for the input.

I just verified that the ALC bars are as described. Line-In and so forth
are set ...

But this wouldn't be band-specific would it?

It's now not just ten meters. What I don't recall is the last time I
actually TRIED to run more than 5 to 10w on a digital mode,

So here's the break-down:
10,12,15,17,20 all toggle to near zero when the click is heard as power
on the K3 is increased from circa 11.8 thru 12w (when I hear a click and
the K3 HP 100 watt deck is activated). None of these will put out more
than 6 to 8 watts despite what the RF power says it thinks the K3 is doing.

40,60,80,160 all will transmit 1 through 100w on TX-Data through the
soundcard.

On CW, 160 thru 10m will xmit 100w .

the number of ALC bars is fairly constant through the bands, in Tx-Data
mode, when sending via the Soundcard.
