Thanks to everyone who commented on this thread - lot's of good advice, 
especially Ron's post.

I've decided to go with the Hakko 808 tool as I have some other rework to do 
where it will be useful.  I think it's great that the install procedure is 
thoroughly debugged using readily available tools, though. This  attention to 
detail is a big part of what makes Elecraft kits so terrific, and the builder's 
experience so postive.
