Interesting. I too am unsure of the need to have a third panel for

anyway.

I don't know, I feel that model could raise some usability issues in many
users... let's see. ;)

It's the native IMAP model, so ought to be easier to implement. We're also talking about expert users here.

It's more efficient over narrow bandwidths, because it only requires setting a flag.

Undelete is easier, because it's obvious where the message was before it was deleted.

Of course, Letters should allow users to choose which model they use. But, Trash can be implemented in the client as a matter of presentation - it's just another message collection (all the messages that are marked "deleted")

Oh, and remember that the Trash model has significant problems if it does actually represent a mailbox on the server:

1. The server has no way of knowing that the messages are "deleted", unless you also mark them deleted. 2. You have to make sure that all your clients are using the same "Trash" mailbox.

This method works well in Thunderbird with an IMAP account. When you 'delete' a message, all that happens is it's flagged for deletion and left in the inbox. Thunderbird fakes it being moved to a Trash folder by hiding it the inbox, and displaying it in the quasi-smartfolder that is the trash.

I say quasi because it doesn't seem to check for messages flagged in the inbox for deletion by other clients. At the same time that Trash is a smartfolder of sorts for deleted messages, it also represents a folder on the server. e.g. messages deleted off my ipod appear in that folder, and they are removed from my inbox, however messages flagged for deletion in Alpine, are left in Thunderbird's display of the inbox, and aren't hidden in the inbox/displayed in the Trash by Thunderbird. The opposite is true, messages deleted in Thunderbird remain in my inbox and appear flagged for deletion when viewed from Alpine.

However, I got to thinking about what I normally see down there in other
apps. A pop calendar or something.

Maybe some way to restrict a search. Eg, drag over a calendar to
restrict the current message list to a particular date range. Or, maybe
have a simple search panel there?

I think that the search should be in the top-right corner of the toolbar,
like Mail, Yojimbo, etc.

However, we don't *have* to put something there. It's a solution to have
the outbox and trash exposed fast if required, but if it turns out it
isn't a good idea, we'll just remove it and have a cleaner UI. :)
