I'm having a weird big problem, and I hope some of you experts can tell
me which direction to go for a solution. It seems to be related to
emailer or email in general, but I'm not sure. I'll relate all the
details, even if some of them may not be pertinent, because I'm sure I
don't know what is pertinent. This post is sent from my wife's computer,
which shares a cable modem connection with me through a hub.

I'm using an iMac running 9.0.4, and CE 2.0.3 Yesterday after being away
from the computer for awhile and finding it asleep, it would not wake up
so I had to a forced restart. Then when I checked mail, the computer
froze. After restarting again, when I checked mail Emailer shut down, and
it continues to do that every time I try to check mail. The program just
turns off. I tried checking mail using Outlook Express, and got a message
that it had failed with a type 2 error and I should shut down all
programs and restart. I've tried this several times with the same result.

I've run disk first aid with no problems. Tech Tool Pro 3 found a couple
of minor software conflicts, saying that my iMovie and DVD player
versions were not fully compatible with OS9, but I've always had those
same conflicts reported in the past, and it doesn't seem to have
mattered. It also found a damaged file that it could not repair- Dataviz
Required Resources, which is in the system folder, and is part of MacLink
Plus. I trashed that file and all the rest of MacLink Plus.

I ran Norton Disk Doctor, and when it finished checking files Norton
failed and I had to restart. But then the next time I ran Norton it just
froze half way through checking files. Finally, another run of Norton
managed to complete, finding a bunch of minor errors, which I let if fix.

The last time I tried Emailer, it shut down the program while checking
mail, but then a few minutes later all the icons on my desktop
disappeared and I had to restart. My web browser works fine, and other
programs like Quicken and a few others I've tried work fine. The computer
has now been on for over an hour since that desktop problem and it hasn't
reoccurred, so it seems that it only happens if I try to use Emailer.

At one point in all my failures, I got a "System Error, Finder, error
type 41" but I'm afraid I've lost track of what went on right before that
error.

I'm sorry to bother everyone with this mess. I'm afraid that I might have
big system problems but my excuse for dumping on on this list is that all
the problems seem to be associated with CE or OE. So far at least,
nothing bad happens unless I try to use email.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
