Thanks to all who have offered help in my time of need. I went down Chris's laundry list of things to try, and what worked was starting with the basic OS9 extensions set. Apparently I have an extension conflict or a corrupted extension. I had not installed anything new or done anything fancy that I can recall before my problem arose, but I guess that the wonderful mystery of computers that makes us love them so dearly.
I don't know if I'd be able to keep using my computer if it were not for all the help Chris has given me. He has helped me with so much beyond the emailer topic. I used to use Conflict Catcher many years and many OSs ago, but had not had a need for a long time. I guess I need it now, so I just ordered the program. I notice that the present version claims to be a big help with installing a new OS. If that is true, maybe I'll get up the courage to install 9.2.2. My wife is a teacher and got a free copy of OS 10.2, but refuses to install it. I notice that the package came with two disks- one for 9.2.2 and another for 10.2, so if Conflict Catcher can convince me that it will ease the transition, maybe I'll go for 9.2.2.
