I'm a user of conflict catcher and recommend it.  
It's possible to do the test by hand, but that 
takes a lot more knowledge than it once did.  

Conflict catcher allows locking certain necessary 
extensions in place, is savvy about extensions 
that work as groups, and  has a very complete 
database full of information about the extensions, 
how to obtain fresh copies, etc.  Well worth the 
bucks, in my opinion, if you'll continue to run 
OS 9 for a while.
