Judging by the alarms sounded in Mac discussion groups (eg http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tlkthrd=2083) there really are quite serious problems with the revised upgrade to OS 10.2.8. Including kernal panics, USB and AirPort Extreme difficulties. Plus eccentric behaviour by apps running in Classic.
One partial solution advanced (by Jerry Friedman) relates to the way in which system upgrades sometimes corrupt biographical data. System Preferences > Internet > Email showed that his email name was now misspelled. Correction resolved his problem. That is the last time I become an early upgrader. Emailer has become a pain. Lets hope Panther does correct all this.
