Appleworks 6 most definitely runs in OSX - no Classic mode needed! 
It was still for sale at the Apple store last time I checked. I use
AppleWorks 6 on my intel iMac. So I know it works. 

For a simple drawing program, take a look at Intaglio. I do so little
with drawing programs; if it's too hard, I don't use it. So far,
Intaglio seems pretty easy to me, and I like it. It even opens Claris
Draw files!
