I'd love to be able to do it with file sharing. My wife and I are connected through a router, and we used to be able to file share when I had an OS machine, but we can't seem to do so since I got an OSX machine. I have a faint recollection that I called Apple and they told me that it wasn't possible. Does that sound right?

The answer is, it depends. OS X as of 10.4 can only do AppleShare over TCP/IP. OS 8.5 and earlier can only do AppleShare over AppleTalk. And OS 8.6 can't be an AppleShare over IP host, although can connect to an AppleShare over IP server.

So the simple answer is, as long as you have 8.6 or later on the old machine, then activate file sharing on the OS X machine, and connect to it with the older pre X machine acting as the client not host. Then you should be fine.

She has a lot of Word files to move, but I suppose we could easily break them into small chunks for transfer by memory stick or CD, but what about Claris Emailer. Do I have to move the entire CE folder (390 mb) or can I move just the Mail folder (100 mb) and address book for conversion into Mac Mail?

Again, depends. If you are converting the old email using Mail or any of the email clients that do it via AppleScript, then you need the entire Emailer setup, application and all, because it needs to actually start Emailer. If you use Emailchemy (hey, I still remember the name!), or one of the email clients that can read the Emailer mail database directly, then in theory you should only need the mail database.

A bigger question might be, do you need all that old mail at all? I never even bothered moving my Emailer mail over to my new machine. I just saved a copy and once in a blue moon, if I need something from it, I just access it using SheepShaver, look up what it is I need, and then be done with it.

Saved a massive amount of effort in converting stuff that was just going to sit around and clog up my new mail client.
