I have never been in your position of supporting a client but I have many times been in a comparable position of having to present a critical demonstration to a sponsor. I learned the hard way that I could not depend of such niceties as network access, remote services, and the like, if a failure meant I lost my chance at funding. We used to prerecord whole sessions so if necessary we could play them back "as if" it were a live demo, and kept printed copies of screen captures and explanatory text just in case our own computers failed. Think it can't happen? In my career, I've had each of the items I mentioned fail at least once in a high-stakes situation. CDs, USB memory sticks, and external disk drives are cheap insurance. I'd load up a couple with the LiveCD, the emc2-dev branch, etc. I'd also practice doing the install with these alternative materials before I left home. By the way, it is exactly this kind of failure that makes me shake my head in amazement when I read about the industry's rush to cloud computing. What do they do when the cloud isn't there? Performance guarantees from the cloud providers aren't worth spit. They are based on the same kind of wishful risk assessment that cost the US several space shuttles and crews. Best wishes. Think of this as a second to his motion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cloud Services Checklist: Pricing and Packaging Optimization This white paper is intended to serve as a reference, checklist and point of discussion for anyone considering optimizing the pricing and packaging model of a cloud services business.
