Heh, If it works don't fix it - is NOT an option :) We humans like to fiddle with things until they are broken then we can fix it the way is should be done. :)
When a pallet pool is added or another machine is added to the pool the OEMs add a separate controller to manage pallets and tools. The machine controllers communicate with the pool/pallet controller to add/subtract tools at the machine. Sometimes the tool hive will physically add/subtract tools on the HIGH(very expensive) end set ups. My reason for asking was to learn how Andy did it. I want to remote control a Coordax MP4 controller box and need to send/receive serial signals while running the CMM. I can already do this with cutecom (an rs232 serial app).
