The index isn't relevant to the return stroke when rigid taping. The
index is used to start the cycle, but the timing of the reverse is
based on the A and B phases.

I suspect that the real answer is either a higher resolution encoder
disc or using a floating tap holder.
A higher resolution encoder? What I have is probably overkill so let me describe it. The A/B signal portion of that encoder is a 1000 ppr omron, driven from the rear of the motor, from an extension shaft I made. Which has a variable scale in the .ini file depending on the gear the go704 is in, detected & controlled by tally switches on the gear shift knob.

encoder scale in the ini file then is

 ENCODER_SCALE_H = 7161.61
 ENCODER_SCALE_L = 14095.34

=counts per rev of the spindle.  Measured by the count diff for 100 turns of the spindle & dividing the result by 100.

 That 90 volt 9.7 amp 1 hp PMDC motor gets 125 volts at full song, and is turning better that 21k revs, I had to by pass those 2 opto's as those signals head for a mesa 5i25 as the optos failed above 400 spindle rpms. Now it shows 3000 revs, dead steady.  They also drive the axis tach so a missfire is obvious.  The encoder A/B is a small fraction of an arc-minute per edge.  I did have an optical encoder, with a 64 slot brass disk but that resulted in too slow a control that made the gears sound like they were running on square balls. Noisey as could be.  I doubt I could get any more accuracy out of it. in low gear that is nearly 40 counts per degree of spindle rotation. That is 5,074,200 hz into the 5i25 at full song.  And it never misses a count. PCW makes great stuff.

I've bought two floating tap holders but they don't fit my tap hats. And I've $500+ in ER collets but none for ER25. I need to design & print a wall of collet holders.  And find a wall to hang them on.  Summer project for my newest 3d printer? If I don't fall over first.

Thanks Andy.

Cheers, Gene Heskett, CET.
