the ATS-667.

In that case, and if the problem really is a phase lag between advance
and retract when tapping, then it might be mechanical.

If you put a dial indicator on the head and jog down to the bed, how
far do you have to jog up again before the indicator starts to move?
barring stiction maybe .0001".  That head is around 25 Kg, takes up ALL the screws lash.
