You didn't mention that, all you mentioned were 8mm prox sensors and
the ATS-667.
The omron has no index, so a screw glued to the spindle and an ATS-667 generate the index. I left that out because you said it doesn't matter.

In that case, and if the problem really is a phase lag between advance
and retract when tapping, then it might be mechanical.

If you put a dial indicator on the head and jog down to the bed, how
far do you have to jog up again before the indicator starts to move?
