One other point is that you may do best by putting the spindle 
in high gear and running the motor VERY slow, a speed range 
setting that would not normally be used.  This will allow the
spindle to reverse very quickly.

I was doing some tapping with a tapping head at 1200 RPM 
recently, and the spiral-flute taps performed MUCH better at 
that speed (in aluminum, 4-40 thread) than at lower speeds.
I don't have a spindle encoder on my machine, yet, so i still 
have to use the tapping head to do the reversing.
