Hi Jon. Welcome to the project. You can learn a lot with just a few IO. HAL and ClassicLadder will allow you to connect those in creative ways. One of my early experiments was pulling a relay to make coffee in the morning. If your computer permits, an extra parport card can expand your project quite a bit. You sound like you should be able to build IO interface circuits pretty easily.
